چکیده

The role of the prefrontal cortex remains controversial. Neuroimaging studies support modality-specific and process-specific functions related to working memory and attention. Its role may also be defined by changes in its influence over other brain regions including sensory and motor cortex. We used functional magnetic imaging (fMRI) to study the free selection of actions and colours. Control conditions used externally specified actions and colours. The prefrontal cortex was activated during free selection, regardless of modality, in contrast to modality-specific activations outside prefrontal cortex. Structural equation modelling (SEM) of fMRI data was used to test the hypothesis that although the same regions of prefrontal cortex may be active in tasks within different domains, there is task-dependent effective connectivity between prefrontal cortex and non-prefrontal cortex. The SEM included high-order interactions between modality, selection and regional activity. There was greater coupling between prefrontal cortex and motor cortex during free selection and action tasks, and between prefrontal cortex and visual cortex during free selection of colours. The results suggest that the functions of the prefrontal cortex may be defined not only by selection-specific rather than modality-specific processes, but also by changing patterns of effective connectivity from prefrontal cortex to motor and sensory cortices.

Visual Information Shapes the Dynamics of Corticobasal Ganglia Pathways during Response Selection and Inhibition

Action selection often requires the transformation of visual information into motor plans. Preventing premature responses may entail the suppression of visual input and/or of prepared muscle activity. This study examined how the quality of visual information affects frontobasal ganglia (BG) routes associated with response selection and inhibition. Human fMRI data were collected from a stop task...

Effects of left prefrontal transcranial direct current stimulation on the acquisition of contextual and cued fear memory

Objective(s): Behavioral and neuroimaging studies have shown that transcranial direct current stimulation, as a non-invasive neuromodulatory technique, beyond regional effects can modify functionally interconnected remote cortical and subcortical areas. In this study, we hypothesized that the induced changes in cortical excitability following the application of cathodal or anodal tDCS over the ...

Can ovariectomy and learning affect prefrontal cortex GABAAα1 receptor distribution in passive avoidance model in rats?

Introduction: The interaction between steroid hormones and neurotransmitters such as GABA has been proved. The regulation of muscimol binding to high-affinity GABAA receptors by estradiol and progesterone has been studied within distinct brain regions using in vitro quantitative autoradiography. There are few studies about the mechanism of the effect of steroid hormones on behaviors such as ...

Effect of Trigonelline on Dendritic Morphology in the Hippocampus and Prefrontal Cortex in Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rats

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus causes adverse changes in the neurological morphology of the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex of the brain by increasing oxidative stress. Trigonelline has antihyperglycemic effects and can inhibit oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to evaluate the protective effect of trigonelline on dendritic changes in hippocampal and prefrontal cortex neurons in dia...

Effects of visual deprivation on epileptic activity in mature rat visual cortex

Effects of visual deprivation on the induction of epileptiform activity were studied in layer II/III of mature rat primary visual cortex. Field potentials were evoked by stimulation of layer IV in slices from control and dark-reared (OR) rats. Picrotoxin (PTX)-induced epileptic activity was characterized by spontaneous and evoked epileptic field potentials (EFPs). The results showed that OR s...
